I believe strongly that eggs are vital you should stay off those dunes. The piping plover chick's eggs have the look and feel to rocks and you could never know as you sever the lifeline to that baby bird who has not even had the chance to look at the dunes you tromped upon. Save the birds, not your walking spot. Audubon is surely NOT a fail, I can assure you.

Um, point was, WE were the fail--I was expressing my guilt. Obviously, not too obviously.
