Wet work
It's amazing what you see when you get up a little earlier in the morning. Today I wandered bleary-eyed down to the lake shore just in time to witness the majestic passage of the Lake Mess Monster, the park's dredger. Presumably it was out doing battle with the invasive phragmites.
The monster wasn't the only bit of gear deployed on the water; nearby, a makeshift raft tugged by a noisy little motorboat came ashore near one of the rustic shelters. The raft bore a rusty-looking rig of some sort and a fellow poking trees with a long stick (pruning, perhaps). It reminded me of Kevin Costner's scruffy raft in "Waterworld."
I poked around the edge of the lake, and found feathers and these lovely yellow flowers amid the usual bottles and cans floating in the reeds.
After the work craft chugged past, the lake was left in mirror-like tranquility. It was about 8:30 a.m.; I thought of all the commuters packed into the subway and all the kids (Child included) slumping into stuffy classrooms and opening unfamiliar textbooks at that very moment...and felt absurdly lucky to be just where I was.
