Red alert

Strawbs 5-31  They are back. And I don't mean from California. Yes, the Jersey strawberries have returned to the Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket. As the gospel story says, Go, sell all that you have, and buy several quarts of them.

Asparagus 5-31
Asparagus are back, too. They don't pack quite the same quality differential compared to their distant cousins, but they're a heck of a lot fresher for the locavoriously inclined.

Compost lady 5-31We got sugar snap peas, sunflower shoots and bok choy in addition to the strawberries. Distractions abounded: a chef making a snap-pea-and-radish salad, a pair of young ladies doing an herbal windowbox demo, and this nice lady showing everyone how to compost with red worms. (We ourselves compost outside with wild native Brooklyn worms.)

Basket of flowers 5-31
A hanging basket in the exact colors that make me happiest, from Evolutionary Organics. I didn't buy it, though; I am too lazy to water hanging baskets thoroughly, and so I usually kill them.

GREENMARKET DOGS OF THE WEEK

Gigi&tootsie 5-31 It has been much too long since a GDOTW! To make amends, we present a pair of good friends: Gigi, a mixed-breed (whose owner suspects some Australian Blue Heeler in there), and Tootsie, a manic pug. Gigi is the older girl, and Tootsie has learned a lot from her over the years, said their human. But not how to calm down and pose for a picture...
